Marie McGilvray and the Ante M Band
Marie McGilvray began writing and performing her mysterious music in her early teens. As a young girl, she was exposed to the sacred music of the Catholic church by hearing her father play the organ for weekly mass: “I remember getting the chills listening to the words as the choir sang those beautiful melodies ”. Marie’s music has often reflected her spiritual journey and poetically explores the deeper aspects of life - who we really are, the beauty that emerges in loss/death, the spiritual and transient realms, nature as teacher and our human connections. Listeners often feel comforted and consoled even as her lyrics surprise, intrigue and reach their innermost spaces. She recently began a meditative music gathering called Musical Rest in which Marie invites guests to take a rest from the busy day, immerse themselves in peaceful listening and settle into the heart of silence.
Her latest release with the Ante M band, Solitary World, was produced by Mark Ephraim (Neko Case, The New Pornographers, Neckbeard Telecaster) and features cinematic musical landscapes, luscious melodies and themes about the physical and ethereal aspects of being human.
In 2007, McGilvray released her debut EP Big Love, and her song “Mockingbird” was featured regionally in the 2008 Presidential campaign. She was a finalist in the Eddie's Attic Songwriter’s Shootout – a bi-annual show that features some of the best up and coming singer-songwriters in the country. Marie performed as a guest of the Songwriter’s Showcase at the Bitter End in New York; Other guest performances include: the Bluebird Café, the Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, the Midpoint Music Festival, and Googie's in New York. Marie also performs and records as a member of the the female duo Rising Violets (see their latest videos below).
